The story of Chelvis: The Chinese Elvis, takes place on a dark and stormy night in 1975. In a San Francisco hospital room laid a newborn, born that morning. The newborn was a boy, a chinese boy. He was normal in every sense of the word, delivered on time and was of healthy weight.
As the boy was asleep in the hospital nursery, there was a blackout. When the lights turned back on, the nurses noticed something had happened. It was a mystery that is still unsolved to this day. The boy had magically lost his diaper and was wearing a white jumpsuit with a gold plated belt buckle. Emblazoned on the belt buckle was one single word. That word was Chelvis.
As a young boy Chelvis’ parents tried their best to give him a normal life. They knew after the mystery of the nursery that Chelvis was special. Holy men from the Church of Elvis began to come and loiter outside the family’s house, but the media attention did not bother young Chelvis.
Chelvis was never really good in sports. He was however really good at the hula hoop. After attempts to start a neighborhood hula hoop team was met by ridicule and physical beatdowns, Chelvis was urged by his parents to keep his hip shaking skills to himself.
But the urge to shake his hips could not be denied…
Chelvis entered himself into the Mr. Suffolk County beauty pageant listing hula hooping as his talent. But when his prized hoop got bent during the dress rehearsal, he had to go to a backup plan. A fellow contestant had a karaoke machine and an old recording of Elvis Presley’s Shake, Rattle, and Roll. So Chelvis as a last resort perfomed the song flawlessly. He added one thing to his performance that made it all his. He changed the song to Shake, Rattle, and Egg Roll and it brought the house down.
The owner of the local Chinese Restaurant caught Chelvis’ performance and soon he was performing at the friday night All-You-Can-Eat Buffet every week. He has been performing ever since to sold out crowds and hungry Dim Sum eaters throughout the world.
Chelvis has performed in Chinatowns and laundromats around the world. He has sold tens and tens of his albums from Shanghai to Boise. In fact his first album was recently certified triple aluminum by the Billboard Association. He has also created the Chelvis Institute for Chinese Elvis Impersonators. He considers this one of his accomplishments. But his greatest accomplishment is being able to touch his fans in each and every one of his performances.
